Compounding is the measurement, preparation, mixing, assembling, packaging and labelling of medication made specifically for your needs making it ideal for patients who are unable to obtain suitable ‘off the shelf’ medication. For more information about how compounding works click here
Unlike mass produced, ‘off the shelf’ medication, compounded medication is made specifically for you. Your doctor can prescribe you medication which is dosed specially for your needs and take into account any allergies, lifestyle choices or personal requirements you need. This ensures that you are getting a medication which will work more effectively and in a safer manner.
Green Dispensary Compounding has a state of the art, purpose built facility dedicated purely to compounded medication. Upstairs we have three specialised departments, where unlike most other hybrid compounding pharmacies, we can guarantee zero cross-contamination of ingredients during production, ensuring your prescription medication is fulfilled to exacting standards.
Compounding has been a part of pharmacy since the profession began, and pharmacists are taught how to compound medications during their undergraduate training.
The Pharmacy Board of Australia states that the compounding of prescriptions is both ethical and legal as long as they are prescribed by a licensed practitioner for a specific patient and compounded by a licensed pharmacy such as Green Dispensary Compounding.
You can also rest assured that all raw ingredients used in our pharmacy are accompanied with a Certificate of Analysis and all imported ingredients are analysed by an independent, registered analytical laboratory.
At all times Green Dispensary Compounding seek to use ingredients from Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) suppliers approved by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) or the USA Food & Drug Administration (FDA)
Pharmacists at Green Dispensary Compounding develop new compounded products all the time – some products are medicinal, others are cosmetic.
Many medicinal compounded products contain active ingredients requiring a doctor’s prescription. However, compounded cosmetic products and some compounded medicinal products are freely available ‘over the counter’ at The Green Dispensary. Feel free to have a chat with your local Green Dispensary pharmacist if you are unsure, they are always happy to help.
The cost of compounded medication is based on the type and amount of ingredients needed, the time it takes to compound and possibly any research that may need to be entered into. Here at Green Dispensary Compounding we use the highest quality raw ingredients not just for your safety but for your health.
Some compounded medications work out cheaper than conventional medication, however, others can work out more expensive. Unfortunately compounded medication is not covered under the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) and are classed as private scripts. If you have private health cover please check with your provider to see if your compounded medication is covered.
If you are concerned about the possible cost of your medication please give us a call and talk to our friendly staff, they will be happy to discuss any options you may have.
Most health funds will cover your prescribed compound medication, however, some health funds do not. It is always best to check with them first.
The time it takes to compound your medication depends on the ingredients needed and the form it comes in. Most products take between 24-48 hours to make, however, if you are after a product which needs to be made in our sterile facility it can take longer. If you are unsure please give us a call.
During the 1980’s in the USA women began demanding that natural hormones be used for Hormone Replacement Therapy. Australia followed suit in the 1990’s and BHRT (Bio Identical Hormone Replacement Therapy) was developed. BHRT hormones are synthesised in a laboratory from wild yam or soy and are made so that the chemical structure of the hormones matches exactly the chemical structure of hormones naturally produced in the body. These BHRT hormones are then incorporated into our Compounded medication.
To receive BHRT your integrated doctor will take a blood test to check your levels and will prescribe a BHRT product specific to your individual needs.
