What is PEA (Palmitoylethanolamide)?
PEA stands for palmitoyl-ethanol-amide
PEA is a natural fatty acid amide produced in our body in response to injury or trauma to manage the effects of chronic pain and inflammation. PEA has neuroprotective, anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving actions. When the body’s natural production of PEA is insufficient, it is thought to contribute to prolonged and chronic pain symptoms.
What is PEA used for?
PEA is one of the most extensively studied non-pharmaceutical molecules for pain currently available.
As a supplement, PEA has been shown to assist with the management of chronic pain conditions including neuropathic pain, either as a standalone treatment or in addition to other pain medications.
How does PEA work?
PEA has a role in controlling the production of inflammatory-inducing molecules which contribute to increases in inflammation and symptoms of pain.
Emerging research has also identified a role within the endocannabinoid system where it is likely to influence pain.
Benefits of PEA
Clinical studies have demonstrated the benefits of PEA for reducing the intensity and duration of chronic pain symptoms.
It appears to benefit neuropathic or inflammatory pain conditions involving the nerves, joints, muscles or tissues such as sciatic and carpal tunnel pain, osteoarthritic pain, peripheral neuropathies, burning mouth, pelvic and menstrual pain and lower back pain.
Is PEA Safe?
PEA has been extensively trialled, is safe to use alongside other medications, and has no reported side effects or interactions.
