Dear valued customer

As part of our educational support program, we would like to offer you some information on omeprazole if you would like more information please contact your doctor.

Omeprazole is used for reflux in babies and children.

How it Works

Omeprazole reduces the amount of acid in the stomach, which helps to reduce the reflux symptoms and helps to protect the food pipe.

  • Allergies to omeprazole
  • Use of cilostazol medication – cannot be used with omeprazole
  • Hepatic impairment

Adverse Effects

Omeprazole is a safe medication and most children can take it without having any side effects, however, if your child develops a rash, swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat, or have difficulty breathing or swallowing they may be allergic to omeprazole, and you must contact your doctor straight away.

Other rare side effects  which usually subside after your child gets used to the medication are:

  • Stomach pain
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Flatulence
  • Diarrhoea
  • Constipation
  • Headache
  • Light-headed or dizzy
  • Sleepy or find it hard to get to sleep

Always check with your doctor or pharmacist before giving any other medicines to your child. This includes herbal or complementary medicines

Omeprazole is formulated into a suspension which can be given at a prescribed dosage – usually 1-2mls via syringe once or twice a day. Give the medication at about the same time each day so that it becomes a part of your child’s daily routine.

Keep omeprazole in the fridge and shake well before use.
